Our Story

About The Compassionate Kitchen®

We have stuck by a core set of principles from the start. We will never compromise on taste or presentation of our products.

The Compassionate Kitchen was borne from the desire to create cruelty free versions of all the conventional, traditional, home baked favourites that they did not want their children to miss out on growing up as caring compassionate people. It started with frustration. Stephen and Joanne noticed that every time they went to a coffee shop there was not one cafe in their neighbourhood that had any vegan treats on their menu. Catching up with friends or family at a coffee shop would usually be a little disappointing. Not being able to enjoy the occasional muffin, slice or cookie with a coffee because they choose not to consume animal products. They would have to travel to the other side of Melbourne just to get a slice of vegan cake. Their hand was forced the day Stephen was made redundant from his full time job only months away from the birth of their second child. Through the NEIS Program (New Enterprise Incentive Scheme) they were able to successfully start their business and follow their dreams.

So Joanne and Stephen started working on their own recipes with the idea of supplying baked goods to a few local coffee shops. All made from plant-based ingredients. If they could get just one cafe to sell their products then they would have somewhere to enjoy a coffee and cake with friends. Being the perfectionists that they are they got drawn into a world of creating new and innovative recipes. Before they knew it they had a "range" of products that when market tested were not only comparable to mainstream products but were actually considered better in taste and appearance. This was their “a-ha” moment. Now the bigger picture was in sight. If they could get vegan products tasting better than conventional products, then surely the choice to eat cruelty free could be made much easier than most people would have thought.

At The Compassionate Kitchen we have a strong set of principles when it comes to one thing – even though we have found alternative methods to using eggs, dairy, honey and butter in all our recipes we will never compromise on taste or presentation of any of our products. We want people to buy our products based primarily on taste and presentation but also knowing that our ingredients are ethically sourced. We have a saying "whatever we are baking we want to bake as if it were for ourselves". Nothing leaves our kitchen unless it's good enough to serve in our home to our family.

"Our dedication to positive change and a better future for all living beings is what motivates us to build this brand." Some of the organisations and friends that we personally advocate and support are Animals Australia, Edgars Mission and Victorian Lamb Rescue.
